Elpidoforos Economou is accredited as Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Kingdom of the Netherlands since November 2015, to the Kingdom of Belgium (June 2017) and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (November 2017).

Prior to his current assignment he served as Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates from March 2012, with concurrent accreditation to the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Republic of Yemen. Since April 2014, he also served as the first Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Ambassador Economou joined the Foreign Service in June 1996 and served in the Political Affairs Division of the Ministry (1996-1997) and as Deputy Director of the Foreign Minister’s office (1997-2002). From 2002-2006 he served as Deputy Head of Mission of Cyprus in Rome (with accreditation to Switzerland, Malta and San Marino) and from 2006-2010 he was the Consul General of Cyprus to Thessaloniki. From April 2010 to March 2012 he was first the Deputy Director of the Foreign Minister’s office and later Deputy Chief of State Protocol.

Mr Economou holds an LLB (Hons) degree from the University of Lancaster (UK) and an MA degree in International Law and International Relations from the same University. He also holds a second MA degree in European Studies and Diplomacy from the University of Macedonia (GR). Mr Economou, prior to his studies, completed his military service in the Cyprus National Guard (1989-1991) as a reserve officer of the Special Forces.

Mr Economou was born in Nicosia on 12th July 1972, he is married to Despina Christodoulidou and has a daughter and a son.
