Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cyprus to the Kingdom of Denmark and to the Republic of Iceland.
Maria Papakyriakou is the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Kingdom of Denmark and to the Republic of Iceland.
Maria Papakyriakou joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1997. She served in the Cyprus Question Division between 1997 and 1999 (as attachée) and between 2004 and 2006 (as First Secretary) and in the Political Affairs Division as Head of the Security Policy Department from September 2010 to September 2011.
From September 2011 until March 2013, she was Director and Head of the Permanent Secretary’s Office. In that capacity she offered policy advice to the Permanent Secretary on the entire range of issues which confront the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From October 2013 until August 2014, she was Head of the Department dealing with International Organizations and Multilateral Affairs in the Political Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Before then, she was Acting Head of the Department dealing with Relations with EU partners, neighbouring countries, Western Balkans, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.Her diplomatic assignments abroad have included Berlin-Germany, where she served as a political officer and deputy head of mission for the last 2 years of her term (1999-2004) and London-United Kingdom, where she served as the Political Counsellor (2006-2010).
She has a postgraduate degree in European Studies, from the Université d’ Aix-Marseilles III, France and a pre-doctorate (D.E.A.) in Political Science from l’ Institut d’ Etudes Politiques de Strasbourg, France.She is fluent in English, French, German and proficient in Italian. She has basic knowledge of Russian.Maria Papakyriakou was born on 20 December 1972. She is married to Evangelos Savva, also a Cypriot diplomat, who is currently serving as the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Finland. They have 2 daughters.
