Frequently Asked Questions
What are the legal points of entry to Cyprus?
Crossing to the occupied areas
1. What are the legal points of entry to Cyprus?
Persons visiting Cyprus must enter and leave the country from a legal port or airport in the areas which are under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. As the northern part of the island is under Turkish military occupation, all points of entry there have been declared illegal and prohibited to all maritime and air traffic. These include the airports of Tymbou (so-called "Ercan") and Lefkoniko and the sea ports of Famagusta, Kyrenia, Karavostasi and Xeros. The ban is recognised and observed by the governments of all countries except Turkey.
2. Crossing to the occupied areas
The so-called “green line” artificially separates the areas under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the northern areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey. Visitors in the free areas who wish to go to the occupied areas may cross the “green line” only via legal crossing points defined by the Republic of Cyprus. No formalities or advance arrangements are required. It is sufficient to inform a Police Officer of the Republic of Cyprus at the crossing point of their intention. It is advisable to carry a passport or identity card solely as proof of identity if requested. Under no circumstances must visitors allow their passports to be stamped by the illegal Turkish Cypriot "authorities". Persons who enter the country from an illegal port or airport in the occupied areas and cross to the free areas, will be doing so in breach of the law and they will suffer the consequences.
