10. Can foreign visitors to Cyprus cross into the area not under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus (Turkish-occupied area)?
Yes, they can. The northern part of the island has been illegally occupied by the Turkish Army since 1974. Consequently the safety and security of visitors cannot be guaranteed in the occupied area, as the lawful authorities of the Republic of Cyprus unfortunately do not have control over it. As a direct consequence of the illegal occupation, ports and airports in the occupied part of the island have been declared “closed” to international air/sea traffic. Therefore anyone wishing to visit the occupied part of the island should enter lawfully through any point of entry (port/airport) in the part of the island which is under the control of the Republic of Cyprus, having obtained a Visa beforehand – if necessary.
