Cyprus and Spain sign Memorandum of Understanding, 05.09.08
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou and his Spanish counterpart Miguel Angel Moratinos signed yesterday a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus and Spain for the Use of the Premises and Infrastructure of the Diplomatic Missions and Consulates of the parties in Third Countries. Moreover, during their meeting, Mr Kyprianou, who was visiting Spain at the invitation of Mr Moratinos, briefed him on latest developments on the Cyprus issue, in light of the 3 September resumption of direct talks. Mr Moratinos commended the constructive stance of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus in this new effort to solve the Cyprus problem and expressed the hope for a positive outcome. The two Ministers reviewed the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Spain, with special attention on the cooperation in energy saving and the use of renewable energy sources. They also discussed international issues such as the Middle East, the situation in Georgia as well as the EU – Russia relations.
UN Security Council lauds launch of negotiations, 05.09.08
The UN Security Council warmly welcomed Wednesday’s launch of full-fledged negotiations in Cyprus, aimed at the reunification of the island, under the good offices mission of the Secretary-General. In a presidential statement yesterday, the 15-member body praised the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat for advancing discussions since their first meeting on 21 March, and expressed support for their common approach. In its statement, read out by Ambassador Michel Kafando of Burkina Faso, which holds the rotating Council presidency this month, the Council called on both sides to continue to work together in a constructive and positive manner in order to reach a comprehensive and durable settlement, approved in separate and simultaneous referenda. The Security Council looks forward to progress in the negotiations, the statement added and reiterates its readiness to support the process. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s recent appointment of Alexander Downer as his Special Adviser on Cyprus was also warmly received by the Security Council.
Markos Kyprianou to visit Athens, 04.09.08
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou departs on Monday, 8 September, for an official visit to Athens, at the invitation of the Greek Foreign Minister Mrs Dora Bakogiannis. The two Ministers will discuss, inter alia, the latest developments on the Cyprus problem, vis-à-vis the resumption of direct negotiations between the leaders of the two communities, the participation of the two countries in the EU and Euro-Turkish relations, as well as the developments in the Caucasus region. Within the framework of his visit, Mr Kyprianou will be received by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Papoulias, the Prime Minister Mr Karamanlis and the President of the Greek Parliament, Mr Sioufas. He will also have meetings with the Greek political parties. The Foreign Minister returns to Cyprus on Wednesday, September 10.
The Foreign Minister departed for Madrid, 04.09.08
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou departed this morning for a working visit to Madrid. During his visit, Mr Kyprianou will have talks with the Foreign Minister of Spain Miguel Angel Moratinos. The discussions will focus on bilateral relations, the Cyprus problem and European issues such as the Barcelona Process-Union for the Mediterranean and the future of the Lisbon Treaty, as well as current international and regional issues such as the developments in Georgia and the Middle East. On Friday, Mr Kyprianou will travel from Madrid to Avignon, France to participate in the Informal Meeting of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs (Gymnich), which will take place from 5-6 September. The situation in Georgia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, relations between Russia and the EU and the peace process in the Middle East are among the issues to be discussed at the meeting. The Foreign Ministers will also discuss a European Security Strategy and transatlantic relations. The Foreign Minister will return to Cyprus on 6 September.

Full-fledged negotiations on the Cyprus problem were launched today, with this morning's meeting between the President of the Republic, Mr. Demetris Christofias, and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat, in the presence of the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Cyprus, Mr. Alexander Downer, and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr Taye - Brook Zerihoun, at the residence of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UNFICYP Chief of Mission, in the United Nations protected area in Nicosia. Additional comments by the President of the Republic Mr. Demetris Christofias at the launch of negotiations on Cyprus, 03.09.08
I wish to make some additional comments beyond what I said in my public statement. On 21 March 2008 we decided to start the preparatory process by establishing a number of working groups and technical committees. Our representatives worked out their titles and agendas and the groups and committees started their work. As I have stated during the assessment we undertook in our previous meeting, convergence has been achieved in some areas whereas diverging views were identified in several others. However there are issues we were unable to agree even on setting up a working group and we allowed the process to continue provided the problem would be revisited. More..

I warmly greet everybody to this official launch of the full-fledged negotiations. I welcome you, Mr. Downer, as Special Adviser and you, Mr. Zerihoun, as Special Representative of the Secretary General and I assure you of our full cooperation. Please convey to the Secretary General our appreciation for his continuing interest and support and that of the United Nations. Cypriot citizens wishing to visit Thailand are advised to postpone their journey, 03.09.08
Following a previous press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic wishes to inform that on September 2nd, the Thai Government declared a state of emergency in the capital Bangkok. The situation in the country remains unsettled and there is a possibility that the political instability could deteriorate. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains in constant communication with the High Commissioner of the Republic in New Delhi who is also accredited in Thailand. The Ministry calls all Cypriots wishing to visit Thailand to postpone their journey unless there is a serious reason. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus hereby publishes a list of hotels situated in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus. The majority of these hotels belong to Greek Cypriot displaced persons who were forced to leave their properties following the Turkish invasion of 1974 or have been built illegally on properties belonging to displaced Greek Cypriots, in violation of the latter’s property rights and without their consent.
