Cyprus reviewed by Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

On the 20th and 21st of September 2016, the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, during its 59th Session held in Geneva, reviewed Cyprus on the implementation of the provisions of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

In her introductory remarks, the Head of the Cyprus Delegation, Law Commissioner, Ms. Leda Koursoumba presented the sixth periodic report of Cyprus for the implementation of the Covenant provisions and referred to the progress achieved in the implementation of the economic, social and cultural rights.

The Rapporteur for Cyprus and Member of the Commission, Mr. Aslan Abashidze, thanked the Cyprus Delegation on behalf of the Commission for the interactive dialogue on the progress made in Cyprus in compliance to the Covenant. Moreover, expressed his satisfaction for various innovative policies implemented by the Republic of Cyprus, – i.e. the Guaranteed Minimum Income Scheme - which he stated that it has enriched the expertise of the Committee and can be shared as best practices with other countries, facing relevant challenges.

The Law Commissioner was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus in Geneva, Ambassador, Mr. Andreas Ignatiou, the officers from the Ministries of Interior, Ms. Xenia Georgiadou, Labor, Welfare and Social Insurance, Ms. Natalia Andreou and Justice and Public Order, Ms. Athena Demetriou as well as the attaché of the Permanent Mission, Ms. Michaelia Avani.
