Bilateral Relations between Cyprus and Iceland

OVERVIEW

Despite sitting almost 5000 kilometres apart on diagonally opposite sides of continental Europe, Cyprus and Iceland have a lot in common. The most obvious similarities stem from the fact that both are island States - with a rich and proud history - having successfully emerged from colonialism in the middle of the 20th century. A lot of the challenges they face are therefore also shared, including the heavy impact on their otherwise vibrant national economies that came with the global economic downturn in recent years.

It is no surprise then that Cyprus and Iceland maintain excellent bilateral relations and cooperate regularly in the international arena. The vast geographical distance between the two islands, however, does restrict bilateral trade, just as it inhibits visits and exchanges on various other levels and fields, such as tourism or culture.

Perhaps most famously (not to mention regularly), Cyprus and Iceland enjoy a healthy competition on the sporting field, as both are leading contestants at the biannual Games of the Small States of Europe (since 1985). On top of that, the two nations have on many occasions been drawn together in qualification groups for major football tournaments, most recently for the 2014 World Cup. Matches between the two national sides are usually very close affairs and are always played in a great atmosphere.
