Bilateral Relations/Political Department
The Republic of Cyprus recognized the State of Palestine in 1988 and actively demonstrates its solidarity towards the Palestinian people and their struggle for independence. In December 2012, Cyprus voted in favor of Resolution 67/19 of the UN General Assembly, where Palestine was granted an observer status (non-member observer State) to the UN. Following the adoption of this resolution, Cyprus upgraded the status of the Palestinian delegation in Nicosia to an Embassy. Since then, the Ambassador of Palestine in Nicosia is included on the list with the other Ambassadors based in Nicosia. The Republic of Cyprus supports a comprehensive and final two state solution on the basis of the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent and viable Palestinian state.
