The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, attended today, in Strasbourg, a special meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, during which he officially assumed the Chairmanship of the Committee until 19 May 2017. Present at the special meeting were the Secretary General, Mr Thorbjørn Jagland, and the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mrs Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Mr Guido Raimondi, and the President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Mrs Gudrun Mosler-Törnström.
Before handing over the Chairmanship of the Committee, the outgoing Chair, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Mr Jürgen Ligi, gave an overview of his country’s achievements during its Chairmanship. Then, Minister Kasoulides presented the Priorities of the Cypriot Chairmanship to the members of the Committee.
Following the Committee’s special meeting, the Minister of Education and Culture, Mr Costas Kadis, inaugurated, in the premises of the Council of Europe, the exhibition, titled “Crisis-Challenge”. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus and Estonia, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, officials of the Council of Europe, Permanent Representatives, as well as diplomats of the Permanent Representations, attended the event.
At 3.30 pm (local time), the inauguration will be held of Strasbourg’s tram line with the colors of the Republic of Cyprus, followed by a special ceremony organized by the Municipality of Strasbourg, in the presence of the Mayor of the town.
During his presence in Strasbourg, Minister Kasoulides had separate meetings with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe and the President of the European Court of Human Rights.
