The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Cyprus have published the book entitled “Atanas (Tancho) Shabanov – Description of my Life in Cyprus”.
This bilingual book, in Greek and Bulgarian, is a vivid description of the memoirs of the Bulgarian rebel Tancho Shabanov, during his exile in Cyprus in 1877, after the suppression of the April Revolution in Bulgaria, during Ottoman rule. Shabanov describes the lives of the Bulgarian imprisoned revolutionaries in Nicosia, as well as the warm relationship between the exiled prisoners with the local population. The book constitutes a treasure of important insights into life on the island during that particular period, revealing in parallel a valuable part in the relations between Cyprus and Bulgaria.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, presented the book on January 21, 2013, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Remarks were offered by Mr Vesselin Valchev, Ambassador of Bulgaria to Cyprus, and Dr Ioannis Theocharides, Professor of the Department of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cyprus.
