Curriculum Vitae

Ambassador Alexandros N. Zenon was appointed Permanent Secretary in October 2013. He had held the same position between 2006-2008. Since 2015 he has also a special responsibility in coordinating cooperation with other Foreign Ministries on Counter Terrorism and Security.
From August 2008 to September 2013 he was the High Commissioner for the Republic of Cyprus in the United Kingdom, Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Member of the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Ambassador Zenon joined the Foreign Service in June 1979 and served in the diplomatic missions of Cyprus in Rome (1982-1989), Vienna-CSCE (1989) and Paris (1991-1996), as well as in various positions and departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nicosia, including in the Foreign Minister’s private office.

From 1996 to 2000 he served as the first resident Ambassador in The Netherlands and Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). During the same period he was Member of the Administrative Council of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

From 2000 to 2005 he was the Ambassador of Cyprus in Italy, Switzerland and San Marino and High Commissioner to Malta.

Back to Cyprus, between 2005 and 2008, he served as Director for European Affairs, Acting Permanent Secretary and Permanent Secretary.

He has represented Cyprus in various experts’ committees of the Council of Europe and of the UNESCO and has undertaken special missions on behalf of the Foreign Minister, or as Special Envoy of the President of the Republic.

Mr Zenon studied Law in the National University of Athens and holds a post-graduate DEA degree from Paris IV-Sorbonne University in History, International Relations and Defence. He was also awarded a diploma in European Studies from the International Institute of Public Administration in Paris. He has also attended successfully the Harvard University course on negotiating process.

He speaks Greek, English, French and Italian.

He has published a number of studies, including on “The evolution of the British Commonwealth”, “The Athenian Parliament (Boule)”, “US military facilities in Turkey”, “Relations of Turkey with the Arab states” and “Inter-communal relations in Cyprus between 1959 -1964 and the attempt to amend the constitution”.

He is married to Aliki Pascali.
He has one daughter, Olga-Maria, lawyer
He was born in Limassol in 1953.
