Cyprus and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was established on 29 April 1997, the same date the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction (CWC) entered into force. The Organization’s main task is the Convention’s implementation and its becoming an international forum, where its member-states may consult and cooperate with one another. Every contracting party of the Convention automatically becomes a member-state of the Organization. The latter is now composed of 188 member-states.

The OPCW is based at THE Hague. The Director General is in charge for a five-year period. Mr Rogelio Pfirter from Argentina is currently the Director General. From July 2010, Mr Ahmet Üzümcü of Turkey will take over as the new Director General.

Each year, the annual Conference of the Organization’s member-states takes place at THE Hague. The last Conference (the 14th) was convened between 29.11-3.12.2009. Among its many items on the agenda, the Conference confirmed the election of Mr Üzümcü as the Organization’s new Director General. Every five years the Convention’s Review Conference takes place. The 2d Review Conference took place at THE Hague (7-18.4.2008).

The Republic of Cyprus is a member-state of the Organization, given that it ratified the Convention in 1998.

The Ambassador of the Republic at the Netherlands, is also accredited as the Republic’s Permanent Representative at the OPCW.
