Make sure that you have a valid passport and check the expiration date carefully. Most countries require that a foreigner leaves the host country at least three to six months prior to the expiration of the passport/travel document.
In order to avoid any unexpected and unpleasant situations, make copies of your passport, insurance policy, travellers cheques, visas and credit card numbers. Leave a copy with someone at home and carry at all times one copy in a separate place to the originals.
It is highly recommended to obtain and keep, at all times, the addresses and telephone numbers of the Cypriot Diplomatic Missions in the country of destination, in order to be able to contact it in case of a real emergency, such as theft or the loss of documents (passport), serious illness or injury, detention/arrest, death, repatriation on medical grounds, or issuance of a temporary travel document (if your passport is lost or has been stolen). Visas
Always check ahead of time whether you require a visa for the countries you are visiting or transiting and check any other entry or exit requirements. If your travel agent is unable to assist, you should contact the Embassy of the country you are planning to visit. For easier reference, a list of countries for which no visa is required for Cypriot Nationals can be found here. in regards to Australia, all travellers, with the exception of New Zealand citizens, must obtain a visa or electronic travel authority before travelling to Australia. Health Precautions
It is strongly recommended to inquire about health care in the country of destination and to obtain information regarding possible vaccinations required and other health advise, especially, when travelling to non-European countries.
Before travelling abroad, you should consult your doctor to discuss known or possible health risks. This is particularly important if you have an existing medical condition or if you are visiting an area where infectious diseases exist. If you take medication on a regular basis you should ask your doctor to prescribe an amount adequate for your visit and it is always a good idea to have a letter from your doctor concerning your medical condition and the type of medication you are receiving.
Please note, that many diseases (cholera, dysentery, etc.) can be contracted from the consumption of contaminated food or water, mainly in areas with poor standards of hygiene. If you are travelling to such areas, please, avoid row food (e.g. dairy products, salads, seafood) and always prefer bottled water.
Travel Insurance
Before you travel, you are strongly advised to purchase a travel insurance and to ascertain if the travel package covers death, health expenses, accidents (car insurance), unexpected losses (e.g. for cancelled flights, stolen cash, cards, passports or luggage) as well as a possible repatriation.
It is also very important to pay attention to the various legal and other ramifications concerning claims, e.g. time limit of application, the extent of the aforementioned cover etc. If you already have private medical cover, please, check with your insurance agent if you are adequately covered in the host country.
Cyprus does not have any kind of bilateral healthcare agreement with Australia. Hence, it is important that you make arrangements to take out comprehensive travel insurance and ensure that it will cover you for the period you plan to stay, the places you plan to visit and the things you plan to do.

In countries where the Republic of Cyprus maintains no diplomatic or consular representation, you can request European consular assistance from an Embassy or Consulate (not an Honorary Consulate) of another EU Member State. To benefit from such assistance, you must be a national of one of the EU Member States, be in distress in a country which is not part of the EU, and, there must be no accessible Cypriot Embassy or Consulate.
The consular assistance provided is strictly limited to a real emergencies, such as theft or the loss of documents (passport), serious illness or injury, detention/arrest, death, repatriation on medical grounds, or issuance of a temporary travel document (if your passport is lost or has been stolen).
In case of a natural disaster or a terrorist attack in the country you are visiting, you are urged to also contact your family back home and inform them about your whereabouts. Even if they know that you are well away from the scene of the incident, they will still be concerned for your safety and a confirmation that you are not in danger, is always a good relief idea to reassure any fears that your family and friends may have.
Local Laws and Regulations
Always comply with the local laws and regulations. You should always bear in mind that laws vary between countries and the penalties for their respective violation may differ. Individuals are personally accountable to the law of their host countries.
Customs and Culture
Be sensitive to the local culture and customs. Do not behave in a manner, which might offend the local people. Respect the local dress codes, especially in Islamic countries, and always remember that a bad behaviour reflects badly both to on your personality you as an individual, as well as to on your country.

First, contact your family and/or acquaintances back home, since they may be able to resolve your problem for you, or help you to do so, without any further assistance.

A Cyprus Mission CAN:
• Assist you in cases of death, serious accident or serious illness, while abroad;
• Issue to you a temporary travel document (laissez passer), should your passport be out-of-date, lost or stolen;
• Furnish you with a list of local doctors, lawyers and translators;
• Help you to contact a person in Cyprus, who can give you the help you need;
• Assist persons arrested, or detained.
• In exceptional circumstances advance funds to allow for your repatriation. This assistance can be offered after you, or your family / friends, have signed a relevant form (Assumption of Responsibility) by which they undertake the responsibility to reimburse the Government of the Republic of Cyprus;
• Provide civil registry and notary services, legalize documents and forward applications and other papers to the competent Cypriot authorities (e.g. passport applications).
A Cyprus Mission CAN NOT:
• Intervene in any private business dispute (e.g. matters related to travelling, banks, insurance, etc.) and nor pay your bills (hotel, medical bills, fines, legal aid, etc);
• Intervene in court operation and police if you have infringed the local laws (e.g. it can not arrange for you to be released from prison or intervene in the judicial proceedings);
• Provide legal advice for any reason whatsoever;
• Find accommodation for you or help you to find a job or obtain a work permit;
• Obtain an extension of your visa, residence or work permit;
• Obtain preferential treatment for you in hospitals during imprisonment/detention or during a visit (as a tourist), than the one offered to the nationals of the host country.
