Hide details for VisasVisas
Australian and New Zealand nationals do not require a visa to Cyprus for a stay of up to 90 days, provided they are bona fide visitors. For entry regulations to Cyprus and to find out whether you are a national of a country that requires (or not) a visa to visit Cyprus, please click here.

Visa Requirements
a). Applications must be submitted in person. However, for those who reside more than 300 km from the Consulate, the applications can be submitted by recorded delivery. In addition, it is also required to arrange for the return of the passport, by enclosing one self-addressed registered post envelope with a prepaid label for person to person delivery or a completed Airway Bill for prepaid courier. If one of the above is not provided, then the passport will be required to be collected in person from our Offices in Canberra.

b). One completed application form signed by the applicant (or the legal guardian in the case of minors) with 2 passport-size photographs attached to it.

c). A full national passport valid for at least three months after the date of expiration of the visa applied for. Visitors wishing to obtain a visa are advised to be in possession of a passport whose expiration date outdates the period of intended stay for at least 6 months.

d). The visa for the return country must be valid for at least three months beyond the period of intended stay. Visa label in the passport is compulsory. However, due to the adoption of the label-free policy by the Australian Immigration, in case there is no visa label in the passport, it is required to provide real-time verification of the visa status through the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) website. The process is simple and quick. Visa holders must visit the VEVO website and register as clients. After logging in to the personal account, there is an option to request from VEVO to send the visa entitlements to a third party. The email address of the High Commission must be then inserted (hccanberra@mfa.gov.cy), so that the information is received directly from VEVO.

e). Provisional Booking or itinerary of travel arrangements (round trip ticket with fixed dates) is necessary. Tickets should NOT be purchased before the visa is issued.

f). A hotel reservation is necessary.

g). In case of a business trip, an official letter of invitation from a Cyprus company must be presented.

h) If visiting friends or family, a letter of invitation from them with their full address, phone number and occupation in Cyprus, together with the original Assumption of Responsibility form, duly completed and signed by the host. This must be certified by a certifying officer of the Republic of Cyprus (in Cyprus) and should bear an €8.54 stamp of the Republic.

i). Solid evidence that there are sufficient funds to cover the cost of the intended stay in Cyprus, e.g. bank statement or travellers’ cheques. Credit cards can be accepted only in addition to bank statements and only with recent statement confirming credit limit. Cash is not an acceptable proof.

j). A recent (dated approximately within one month) official letter from the employer addressed to the Cyprus Consulate, with proof of the applicants wages/salary. If self-employed, a letter from the solicitor, the accountant or the bank manager of the applicant. If a student in the country of the Consulate, an original letter from the school or University addressed to the Cyprus Consulate confirming the status/ attendance and the duration of the course.

k). The Consulate may also ask for a copy of a Bank Guarantee Letter from the host, so as to cover possible repatriation costs. This must be valid for at least one year and it must cover a period of at least 90 days from the intended date of entry to Cyprus.

l). The related fees in Australian dollars for Single Entry (€20) or Multiple Entries (€60) is required for the application processing. Please be informed that the exchange rate between the Euro and the Australian dollar change every month. For this reason, please call the High Commission to confirm the exact cost of the related fees in Australian Dollars.

Useful Information
The necessary time for processing a visa application is approximately 10 working days.
The visa fee is not reimbursed if the application is declined.
It is highly advised that comprehensive travel insurance is organized to cover your travel.
There is no legal right to a visa. The fact that a visa has been granted does not automatically entitle the holder to enter Cyprus. The prerequisites for entry will be checked again on entry into the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.
Visitors who will be travelling from Cyprus to a destination other than their country of citizenship should be in possession of a visa to enter the said third country.

Hide details for CONSULAR ASSISTANCE AND PROTECTIONCONSULAR ASSISTANCE AND PROTECTION
The right to diplomatic and consular protection constitutes an essential entitlement of citizenship of the European Union. This right marks the extension of the institution of EU citizenship to outside the borders of Member States. In that sense, Article 23 of the Lisbon Treaty states that

“Every citizen of the Union shall, in the territory of a third country in which the Member State of which he is a national is not represented, be entitled to protection by the diplomatic or consular authorities of any Member State, on the same conditions as the nationals of that State. Member States shall adopt the necessary provisions and start the international negotiations required to secure this protection.”

The citizen’s right to receive consular protection from a Member States under the same conditions which apply for the citizens of the Member State in question, is one of the special rights where the Treaty provides to the EU citizens and states an external dimension to the meaning of EU citizenship. This right enforces the idea of European solidarity, as well as the EU identification in third countries.

Hide details for MILITARY SERVICEMILITARY SERVICE

Ιn accordance with the provisions of the Law relating to National Guard, military service is compulsory for all male citizens of the Republic of Cyprus who reside in the territory of the Republic, including persons who are not Cypriot citizens but are of Cypriot descent (from either side of parents) and thus are eligible to acquire the Cypriot citizenship. The obligation commences in the year the person becomes 18 and continues to the year of his 45th birthday. Reserve military service extends up to the year of the 50th birthday.

Persons exempted from military service include those who live permanently abroad, for as long as they continue to reside outside Cyprus. However, regardless of the permanent residency abroad condition, when visiting Cyprus,
persons between the ages of 16 and 26 (both inclusive) are required to present on departure from the country a special Exit permit. These permits are for a single use and are issued by any Army Enlistment Office under the Ministry of Defence or by the Citizen Service Centres in the District of Famagusta and in Polis Chrysohou. The same requirements apply for persons (permanent residents abroad) between the ages of 27 and 45 (both inclusive) who stay in the Republic for a period exceeding three (3) months.

The certificate of “Permanent residence abroad” has a validity of one year. For the High Commission to issue this certificate, it is required to submit (by post) the following documents:

1. Photocopy of the main page of current passport;

Please be informed that, due to the fluctuations in the exchange rate between the Euro and the Australian dollar, the fees for the certificate of “Permanent residence abroad” might be subject to change every month. For this reason, if you delay submitting your application beyond the end of this month, please call the High Commission to confirm the exact amount of the related fees
.

Please also note that
persons between the ages of 18 and 26 are eligible to additionally apply for a “Certificate of Exemption from Military Service for Permanent Residents Abroad”. This Certificate is issued by the Ministry of Defence and, contrary to the Exit permit, it can be used for an indefinite period, until the permanent residency abroad condition ceases to apply. However, where the duration of stay is greater than 3 months, a special Exit permit by the Ministry of Defence will be required. For the issuance of a “Certificate of Exemption from Military Service for Permanent Residents Abroad”, the enclosed application form must be submitted, together with the above required documentation. There is no additional fee, apart from the fee for the certificate of “Permanent residence abroad”.

Applications for “Certificate of Exemption from Military Service for Permanent Residents Abroad” that are submitted without the above documents will not be considered complete by the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus. This certificate is posted
directly by the Ministry of Defence to the address stated on the application. Hence, the Cyprus High Commission is not in a position to control the required time for its issuance. However, in case that the “Certificate of Exemption from Military Service for Permanent Residents Abroad” does not reach the applicant on time, the certificate of “Permanent residence abroad”, which is posted by the High Commission, can be used in Cyprus for the issuance of a single Exit permit, as described above.
