Verification of signatures is done in person at the High Commission before a Consular officer.

Certification of a Cypriot document as a true copy

Please note that only documents emanating from the Republic of Cyprus can be certified as a true copy of the original.

Please present the original document for inspection and a copy of it.

Certification of documents verified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus

The signature of the certifying Officer(s) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus may be certified by the Consular Section of the High Commission. Please note that if the seal/signature to be legalized appears on a copied document, this will first need to be certified as a true and authentic copy in Cyprus before being presented at the High Commission. This is only for official documents of non signatory countries of the Apostille Convention.

Power of Attorney

A Power of Attorney allows an individual to authorise someone else to act on his or her behalf. This Power of Attorney document becomes effective immediately upon its signing and stays in effect until the death of the donor or until revoked. The Cyprus High Commission does not provide a power of attorney. If an individual requires a Power of Attorney, it is suggested that a lawyer prepare such a document and signature will be certified at the High Commission.

APOSTILLE SEAL

The Republic of Cyprus has acceded to the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of legalization for Foreign Public Documents, signed in the Hague, on 5.10.1961. The Convention was ratified by the Law 50/72. For the implementation of this Convention, the Ministry of Justice and Public Order has been assigned as the Central Authority. Therefore, legal public documents issued by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus can only be considered legal by the Republic of South Africa if an “Apostille” seal is placed on them. Legalization on a document which bears the “Apostille” seal is not necessary.

Sworn Oaths


A sworn oath may not be signed before a Consular Officer but in front of a Judge or Registrar in the Republic of Cyprus. The Consular Officer can only certify the signature of the person who signs each document (signed but not sworn).
