Citizenship Applications




  • Applicants are requested to bring the appropriate documents as listed below. 
  • The Consular Section will not photocopy any documents. This is the applicant’s sole responsibility.
  • Please note that incomplete applications will not be accepted.




Kindly ensure that an appointment is made for the submission of an application. For appointments please contact 012-3463298/012-3463329 (Pretoria) from Monday to Friday from 13:00 until 15:00 except on public holidays, or email us at pretoriaconsulate@mfa.gov.cy

The applicant must submit the original Unabridged Birth Certificate and the Unabridged Marriage Certificate - these documents must be Apostilled.

The Original Unabridged Birth certificate will be sent, along with the application, to the Department of Civil Registry and Migration in Cyprus and will not be returned to the applicant.

· APPLICATION FOR ACQUISITION OF CITIZENSHIP FOR REGISTRATION OF MINORS OR ADULTS WHO WERE BORN ABROAD AFTER 16 AUGUST 1960 AND EITHER THEIR FATHER IS A CYPRIOT CITIZEN OR, AFTER 11 JUNE 1999, THEIR MOTHER IS A CYPRIOT CITIZEN AT THE TIME OF THEIR BIRTH – (M121)

1. Relevant application form duly completed (M121 Greek) (M121 English)


2. Applicants Apostilled original Unabridged Birth Certificate (Appostille is issued
by DIRCO or a High Court)


3. Parents' Cypriot Passport and ID


4. Proof of the parent being a Cypriot Citizen at the time of the applicants' birth (old
Cypriot Passport or ID)


5. Certificate of acquisition of the Cypriot citizenship of the Cypriot parent


6. Parents’ Apostilled Unabridged Civil Marriage Certificate or non-Apostilled photocopy of Marriage Certificate issued by the Greek Orthodox Church (Appostille is issued by DIRCO or a High Court)

7. Where no marriage has taken place at the time of the child’s birth and child is born out of wedlock, each parent must submit a sworn declaration recognising the minor as
their biological child at the High Commission. A sworn declaration can be issued
only by a Court in the Republic of Cyprus


8. Applicant’s current passport (other nations passport if has one)


9. 1 colour photo of applicant


10. Letter of consent of non-Cypriot parent signed and verified at the High Commission of
the Republic of Cyprus. (Letter of Consent)


11. Photocopy of non-Cypriot Parent's Passport and ID

12. Applicant has to provide a copy - if he is holder- of any other nations Passport and ID

13. Both parents should be present when application is submitted

Citizenship application fees:


o €20 for Consular Birth Certificate ( issued at the High Commission)

o €20 for Electronic Birth Certificate (issued in Cyprus)

o €9 for revenue stamp


(if additional certification of a document is required a €2.00 revenue stamp will be charged per certification)

7. If applying through a grandparent please submit father's/mother's unabridged birth
certificate (proof of line of descent from grandparent to parent and applicant)




Citizenship application (M123) fees:


o €50


o €9 (x2) revenue stamp

· APPLICATION FOR ACQUISITION OF CITIZENSHIP BY A SPOUSE OF CYPRIOT CITIZEN AFTER THEY HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST THREE YEARS OF MARRIAGE (AT LEAST FIVE YEARS OF MARRIAGE IF THEY LIVE ABROAD) - (M125)

2. Cypriot Spouse’s passport and ID


3. Cypriot Spouse’s certificate of citizenship


4. Applicant's Apostilled Unabridged Civil Marriage Certificate or non-Apostilled photocopy of Marriage Certificate issued by the Greek Orthodox Church (Appostille is issued by DIRCO or a High Court)



5. Applicant’s Apostilled Unabridged Birth Certificate (Apostille is issued by DIRCO or a High Court)


6. Applicant’s Current Passport and ID


7. Certificate of harmonious marriage from Archbishopric or priest stating couples
period of marriage. (Statement of Cypriot spouse) - not older than 1 month


8. If Cypriot spouse is deceased, a certificate from Archbishopric or priest stating that
the couple were married up until the date of death of the Cypriot spouse and that the
spouse has not remarried (please include the death certificate of Cypriot Spouse)


9. Unabridged birth certificate of couple’s children


10. Applicant's Apostilled Police Clearance of clear criminal record (Apostille is issued by DIRCO or a High Court). Police clearance is only valid for 6 months after issuance.


13. The applicant and their Cypriot spouse must be present at the Cyprus High
Commission to sign the application

o €300


o €9 (x2) revenue stamp

2. Father’s/Mother’s Cypriot passport and/or Citizenship Certificate


3. Father’s/Mother’s Cypriot Identity card


4. Parents’ Apostilled Unabridged Civil Marriage Certificate or non-Apostilled photocopy of Marriage Certificate issued by the Greek Orthodox Church (Appostille is issued by DIRCO or a High Court)


5. Applicants Apostilled Unabridged Birth Certificate (Appostille is issued
by DIRCO or a High Court)


6. Applicants' and parents' South African passports (or any other nations)


7. Certificate of acquisition of the Cypriot citizenship of the Cypriot parent (where
applicable)


8. Letter of Consent of parent who is a non-Cypriot Citizen signed and verified at the
High Commission (Letter of Consent)


9. Photocopy of non-Cypriot Parent's Passport and ID


10. Two colour passport photos




Citizenship application (M126) fees:

o €80

o € 9 for revenue stamp

o €2.00 for revenue stamp


(if additional certification of documents is required €2.00 revenue stamp will be charged per certification of documents)

Importance Notice:

*All Public Documents issued by a foreign country must be "apostile" with the exception were the country is not a participatory to the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of legalisation for Foreign Public Documents. The Republic of Cyprus has acceded to the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, signed in the Hague, on 5.10.1961. The Convention was ratified by the Law 50/72. For the implementation of this Convention, the Ministry of Justice and Public Order has been assigned as the Central Authority.
