Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the chemical attack in Syria, 06.04.2017

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus underlines its utter and unreserved indignation and unequivocal condemnation for the abhorrent chemical attack that occurred on Tuesday, 4th April 2017, in the town of Khan Sheikhoun of Idlib Province in northern Syria, which led to the tragic loss of tens of innocent civilian lives.

Cyprus had facilitated the removal and destruction of chemical stockpiles from Syria by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and considers that the use of chemical weapons amounts to a war crime and crime against humanity and that the perpetrators should be held accountable.

Cyprus will lend its support to any efforts in international fora for a strong reaction and condemnation of this atrocious attack by the international community.
