The further strengthening of cooperation between Cyprus and Israel was discussed on Sunday in Israel between the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs Averof Neophytou and the President of Israel Reuven Rivlin.

According to an official press release, Neophytou was received by the President of Israel in the framework of his visit to Israel at the invitation of the Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Comittee Tzachi Hanegbi.

During their meeting, they both stressed the importance of further strengthening cooperation between Cyprus and Israel for the stability in the sensitive region of the Eastern Mediterranean as both countries share the same democratic values.

They also noted that the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation lies in the fact that both sides face common challenges and threats such as global terrorism.

In addition, Neophytou stressed that the cooperation between Cyprus - Israel in the energy field is expected to contribute significantly to the energy security of Europe but it can also create relations of stability in the region. In this context, particular reference was also made to the tripartite cooperation between Cyprus, Israel and Greece.

Rivlin expressed appreciation for the support that Cyprus provides to the state of Israel, making a positive reference to the contribution of Averof Neophytou to the dynamic relations between the two countries.

Referring to current developments in the Cyprus problem and the efforts to find a solution through dialogue, Neophytou stressed that the Greek Cypriot side can not accept a solution that provides for Turkey`s guarantees adding that such a possibility would negatively affect Israel`s strategic depth.

Finally, they exchanged views on issues of interest in relation to the wider region of the Middle East.

Hanegbi and the Ambassador of the Republic to the state of Israel Salina Salina Shambos were also present at the meeting.
