IMPORTANT NOTICE: INCIDENTS OF INTERNET FRAUD

The Embassy would like to advise all Cypriot consumers and companies, before ordering or purchasing products through the internet, to check thoroughly the reliability of the selling company.

An increase in the incidents of internet fraud has been noticed in the last few months. In this respect, the Embassy has been made aware that many Cypriot companies are buying products from foreign companies, including Chinese companies, through the internet, via certain specific websites. However, there are often problems with these transactions (for example, the products arrive in Cyprus but are not the correct ones, or they are faulty etc) while sometimes the seller company is proven to be unreliable or even non-existent.

It is for this reason that the Embassy would like to draw the attention of all companies operating in Cyprus to be particularly careful when they purchase or order products through the internet. First of all, the Cypriot company must undertake a thorough research in order to confirm the reliability, legality and existence of its intended commercial partner. The best way to do this is by personally meeting with the directors of the company and by actually visiting the factories/companies/industries. This practice must be applied in all cases where there is an intention to proceed to large purchases on the internet.

The Embassy would also like to draw attention to the fact that some commercial- private- websites do not take responsibility or in any way check the background and reliability of the companies that advertise their products on them. In this sense, all relevant parties are requested to be careful when using commercial websites for the purchase of large amounts of products.

In any case, all interested parties could contact the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Beijing, which can provide information to companies that wish to do business with or in China. The contact details of the EUCCC are as follows:
