Studying in Cyprus
On account of its strategic location in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Cyprus became a stepping stone for merchants, historians, geographers, philosophers, and artists—a place where various peoples came together, in times of peace and in the midst of wars, bringing on the island the mark of their own civilization and culture. After the arrival of the Achaean Greeks in ca 1200 BC, Cyprus became a cradle for the letters, a birthplace for philosophy, and an inspiration for the artists. The island’s troubled history and the conditions which have prevailed have shaped national consciousness to value education, as well as all issues pertinent to education, with deep respect.

Similarly to China, Cyprus prides itself for its thousands year old history, the wealth of civilization, and long-standing traditions. Due to this fact, friendly relations between the two countries have been developed which led to a prolific collaboration in the fields of culture, education and the sciences. Realizing the great potential of strengthening these relations even further, especially in the fields of higher education and research, both countries are taking the necessary measures towards this direction. These measures aim at enhancing collaboration between universities and research centers of the two countries and providing opportunities to Cypriot and Chinese students to study at recognized quality institutions and programmes of study in China and Cyprus respectively.

For Cyprus, the role of education, research, and innovation in the country’s economy and society is crucial for social and economic development and prosperity and for this reason Government policy aims to establish Cyprus as an international Educational and Research Center. Steps towards this direction include the expansion of university level education with the increase of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of study at the University of Cyprus, the Open University of Cyprus and the Cyprus University of Technology, the establishment of private universities, namely the Frederick University, the European University Cyprus, the University of Nicosia, the Neapolis University Pafos and the UCLAN Cyprus and investment in research and innovation. Additionally, national policy with regard to higher education is aligned with the EU’s guidelines and quality standards. Cyprus endorsed the Bologna Process by becoming a member country in 2001, and has managed to a significant extent, to conform to its provisions through a flexible and progressive environment within which Higher Education on the island has grown. The formulation of a strict legislative framework, providing for rigorous quality assurance mechanisms, constitutes the foundation of the Higher Education system in Cyprus.

Higher Education in Cyprus is provided by university and non university institutions. A plethora of accredited programmes of study leading to recognized academic qualifications are offered at the undergraduate level (Bachelor’s Degree) and postgraduate level (Master’s and Doctorate). The language of instruction in public universities is Greek for the majority of programmes offered, whereas, in private universities English is primarily used as the language of instruction.

Due to the expansion of higher education in Cyprus and due the quality assurance mechanisms, Cyprus has become a higher education destination for a significant number of international students. During the academic year 2008 - 2009, 10,765 international students were studying in Cyprus (35% approx. of the total student population). 1,013 international students came from China.

Cyprus’ accession to the EU in 2004 constituted a milestone with regard to higher education and university research. There was a significant leap in the percentage of the GDP utilized in research activities. Cyprus’ participation in European research programs, such as the Framework Programmes for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities, was a catalyst to the expansion of research activities as it enabled Cypriot scientists to create networks of cooperation with their overseas colleagues.
