Location and Size: Cyprus is a small island of 9,251 sq km, extending 240 km from east to west and 100 km from north to south. It is strategically situated in the far eastern corner of the Mediterranean (33o E, 35o N), at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and Asia.

Climate: Mediterranean with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.

Population (Statistical Service Demographic Report 2014): 938,400. Greek Cypriots - including Maronites, Armenians and Latins 694,700 (74,0%); Turkish-Cypriots 91,400 (9,8%); foreign residents 152,300 (16,2%).
