The European Parliament approved today a written declaration calling on Turkey to return the fenced-off city of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants.
The declaration, which secured 390 signatures, was introduced by MEPs Lidia Joanna Geringer de Oedenberg, Willy Meyer, Michalis Tremopoulos, Cecilia Wikstrom and Artur Zasada, after the initiative of Cypriot MEPs and citizens of Famagusta with the support of Famagusta Municipality.

UNHCR Cyprus and APOEL Football Club have decided to join hands in support of refugees and those people who continue to be forcibly displaced or uprooted from their homes due to violence and persecution.
A press release issued by UNHCR Cyprus said that ''this humanitarian initiative by APOEL is very much welcomed as it comes at a time when the Middle East and the Mediterranean region from Tunis to Syria and beyond are witnessing increasing political instability, and where untold atrocities are being committed everyday against innocent civilians.''

Noble Energy is considering the option of building a terminal in Cyprus in order to provide natural gas for the domestic market and for exports, Vice President Noble Energy Terry Gerhart has said, noting that the estimation for 5 to 8 trillion cubic feet natural gas in Cyprus' block 12 is a very large accumulation of gas.
Speaking here Wednesday after a meeting he held with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, Gerhart said that they had a very good meeting with the President. “We updated him on our progress with the well”, he said and added: “As everyone is aware we drilled a successful well and made an announcement at the end of the year. Somewhere between 5 and 8 trillion cubic feet of gas were found and we look forward to progressing it and bringing it to reality for the Cypriot market”.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias announced on Wednesday that exploratory drilling carried out by Huston-based Noble Energy in block 12 of the island's Exclusive Economic Zone revealed a gross mean average of 7 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of natural gas, describing the discovery as ''a historic development.''

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has called on Turkey on Thursday to abandon its gunboat diplomacy and instead adopt a policy of conciliation and compromise.
The President made the remarks during visits to National Guard and Hellenic Forces of Cyprus camps to wish the soldiers and the officers for Christmas and the New Year.
President Christofias said that “if Turkey does not change its gunboat diplomacy and stop playing the part of regional police officer there will be consequences which, for sure, will not be good neither for the whole region nor the Turkish people and foremost, the Turkish Cypriots”.

The finding of natural gas in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone creates huge prospects for long term economic growth, from which this generation and the generations to come will benefit, President Demetris Christofias has pointed out.
Addressing the 1st Symposium on Energy held in Nicosia on Thursday, Christofias expressed the government’s commitment to continue to work hard, with responsibility and methodology, to vindicate the people’s expectations for economic development and prosperity. The President’s speech was read out by Under Secretary to the President Titos Christofides.
