President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias inaugurated Tuesday the modern facilities of the “Filoxenia” conference centre in Nicosia, where the main events will take place during the Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU, in the second half of 2012.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Christofias underlined that a successful Cypriot Presidency is a national target for Cyprus, and called upon all – political parties, organised groups and ordinary citizens – to cooperate towards that goal.
''It gives me great pleasure to be here to inaugurate the renovated Conference Center ''Filoxenia'' and the Press Center ''CyPress''. The heart of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU will be beating on the premises of this modern Conference Centre”, he said.

 | President Christofias says he will not seek re-election |

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias announced on Monday his decision not to seek re-election in the presidential elections of 2013.
During a 15-minute televised address to the people of Cyprus, the President said that “given the fact that the Cyprus problem has not been solved and it does not seem possible to achieve decisive progress during the next months, I have definitely decided that I will honour my pre-election commitment” and not seek re-election.

Cyprus and Denmark signed on Monday a Memorandum of Understanding providing for cooperation during the Cyprus EU Presidency.
According to an official announcement, the Memorandum was signed in Brussels, by Cyprus’ Agriculture Minister Sofoklis Aletraris and Danish Minister for the Environment Ida Auken.

A ship hoisted sails today steering for a new journey, having as its destination the heart of Europe, carrying with it the spirit and enthusiasm for the first Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.
This ship/bird is depicted on the logo of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, unveiled during a ceremony held here on Europe Day at Filoxenia Conference Centre, in the presence of ambassadors, representatives of diplomatic missions of EU member states and other officials.

Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Sofoclis Aletraris presented Thursday the programme of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, as regards issues concerning his portfolio.
Cyprus will assume the six monthly rotating presidency of the Council in July.
The Minister’s presentation took place in the framework of a seminar entitled ''The EU Environmental Priorities to be promoted during the Cyprus Presidency of the EU and the role of NGO's'', which took place in Nicosia. The seminar was organized by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), the Federation of Environmental Organization of Cyprus (NGOs), The Friends of the Earth, Terra Cypria and the Cyprus Conservation Foundation.

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has said that Cyprus is still suffering the effects of a fascist coup of 15 July 1974, carried out by EOKA B’ fascist elements and Athens Junta that led to the Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern part of Cyprus.
In his address at a special commemorative event organized in Nicosia today to honour the 67th Anniversary of Anti-fascist Victory during World War II, President Christofias said that it is our state’s and society’s obligation not to forget but to remember and honour the anniversary of victory against fascism.
We attribute great importance to keep alive in the memory of the people the suffering by fascism, the extraordinary effort, and countless sacrifices to defeat it.
