Kosovo

Cyprus fully adheres to the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity of all States, including Serbia, and does not recognize the unilaterally declared independence (UDI) of Kosovo.

In this context, the Republic of Cyprus participated in all of the three International Court of Justice (ICJ) proceeding stages of the request for advisory opinion “on the accordance with international law of the unilateral declaration of independence by the provisional institutions of self-government of Kosovo”, in support of the position that the UDI of Kosovo was not in accordance with international law.

Cyprus supports efforts to finding a mutually acceptable solution to the issue of Kosovo via the EU facilitated Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, stipulated by the Resolution 64/298 adopted by the UN General Assembly on 9 September 2010; the UN Security Council Resolution 1244/99 remains the sole legal basis to this end. Respect to the relevance and legality of UNSCR 1244/99 is a sine qua non for Cyprus.
