Cyprus pays tribute today to all those killed during the Turkish invasion in 1974 which resulted in the occupation of 37% of island`s territory.

Turkish troops invaded Cyprus on 20 July 1974, following a military coup that toppled the legal government of the Republic which was engineered with the Greek military junta.

In a two-phase invasion Turkey occupied 37% of the sovereign territory of the Cyprus. As many as 200,000 Cypriots were forcefully driven away from their homes and became refugees in their own homeland as Turkey split the island in two.

The most tragic consequence of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus is the missing persons’ issue. Since 1974, the fate of hundreds of people remains unknown.

Turkey is implementing a systematic policy of settlement of the occupied part of Cyprus with the mass transfer of more than 160,000 Turks from Turkey changing the demographic situation, while destroying at the same time the cultural heritage of the island.

We would never forget the abhorrent acts of inhumanity committed by Turkey.

We would never forget the anguish and the despair caused during those agonizing days.

We would never forget the horror of that war and the pain that was inflicted on the people of Cyprus.
