Cyprus - Canada Relations
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Cyprus and Canada were established in 1960.
Both countries share their views on disarmament, peaceful resolution of conflict, respect for the principles of International Law, and the support and enhancement of the role of the United Nations Security Council. Cyprus and Canada share a common history and heritage in the Commonwealth and have been close friends and allies as a result of our common links in the Francophonie, the OSCE and other important international organizations.
Canada’s active role for 29 years in the UNFICYP peacekeeping presence on the island has made our ties even closer. Canada welcomed thousands of Cypriot immigrants, including a large number of Cypriot refugees following the 1974 Turkish invasion and gave them the opportunity to flourish and prosper. This has contributed in the enhancement of the relations of the peoples of our two countries. On its behalf Cyprus has offered its assistance to Canada with the evacuation of many Canadian citizens during the crisis in Lebanon and today offers the Canadian soldiers who are on their way to Canada from Afghanistan a place to rest and, mentally and physically decompress, before they return home.
Cyprus membership status in the European Union from 2004 has expanded the prospects of cooperation with Canada on various international issues. Today Canada’s close ties with the European Union make even stronger our common values and principles.
The excellent diplomatic relations between Canada and Cyprus lead towards the establishment of Cyprus and Canada Parliamentary Friendship Committee in 1994. The Committee is of tremendous importance regarding Cyprus and Canada parliamentary relations, but also as a tool to inform the members of the current situation in Cyprus. Canada has been always a strong supporter and advocate of Cyprus’efforts for a just settlement of the Cyprus issue and the reunification of the island. Canada's support to Cyprus for a viable solution in the framework of the UN resolutions, and the values and principles of the EU has been greatly appreciated by Cyprus.
