Accession negotiations between Cyprus and the EU commence.

The EU Corfu Summit decides that the next phase of enlargement will include Cyprus and Malta.
1993
The European Commission issues its positive opinion on the membership application of Cyprus.
1990
The Republic of Cyprus applies for membership to the EU.
