HIGH COMMISSION OF THE
REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS IN
PRETORIA
ANNOUNCEMENT
On the occasion of the sad 40th anniversary of the Turkish invasion in our homeland, the Cyprus Brotherhood of South Africa, under the auspices of the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in Pretoria, is organizing a memorial service on Sunday 20 July 2014 at the Hellenic Orthodox Church of Saint John in Germiston for the victims of the tragic events of 1974 as well as for the late Archbishop Makarios III. The Service will be officiated by His Eminence the Metropolitan of Johannesburg and Pretoria Mr. Damaskinos at the presence of the Deputy Mr. Sophoclis Fyttis, President of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Equal Opportunities between Men and Women at the Cyprus Parliament, who represents H.E. the President of the House of Representatives Mr. Yiannakis Omirou.
During his stay in South Africa, Mr. Fyttis will visit Hellenic Communities, benevolent institutions and the SAHETI School and will have meetings with the leadership of our Community.
After the memorial service at the Church of Saint John in Germiston, finger lunch will be served at the premises of the Cyprus Brotherhood in Bedfordview and at 14:00 hrs, at the same place, two Byzantinologists will make presentations on the topic “The destruction of Christian Cultural Heritage and Byzantine Art in the Occupied Areas of Cyprus”. The Byzantinologists are Prof. Charalambos Chotzakoglou, Director of the World Forum of Religions and Cultures of Kykkos Monastery and Dr. Ioannis Eliades, Director of the Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation. They will make the same presentations also in Durban and in Pretoria. The presentations in Durban will take place on Thursday 17 July 2014, at 19:30 hrs, at the Conference Centre of the Hellenic Community of KwaZulu-Natal near the Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas (6, High Grove, Umgeni Park, Durban North). The presentations in Pretoria will take place on Wednesday 23 July 2014 at 18:00 hrs at the Cultural Centre of the Hellenic Community of Pretoria (Corner 37, Lynnwood & Roper Streets, Brooklyn).
The Cyprus Brotherhood of South Africa and the Cyprus High Commission urge the members of our Community to attend the above memorial service and functions in order to keep alive the memory and sacrifices made by the victims of these tragic events and condemn the unacceptable Turkish occupation and division of our homeland.
