  • Ambassador Helena Mina visited the International Olive Council headquarters in Madrid and was welcomed by Executive Director, Mr Abdellatif Ghedira.

During the meeting, Mr Ghedira outlined the mission of the Organisation and stressed the International Olive Council’s contribution to the sustainable and responsible development of olive growing. The IOC serves as a world forum for discussing policymaking issues and tackling present and future challenges, working also in close partnership with the private sector and member governments.
Ambassador Mina expressed her appreciation for Cyprus’ cooperation with the Organization, stressing that our country’s ultimate aim is to improve the quality of the Cypriot olive oil and also to increase the consumption of olive oil in Cyprus. Towards that end, she expressed the will for more cooperation and more targeted training for better developing the olive sector in Cyprus.

The Ambassador also informed the IOC Executive Secretary on Cyprus’ ongoing efforts to certify the Cyprus olive tree, which has some unique features and, as a corollary, the olive oil deriving from these trees as a product of protected geographical indication.


  • The new Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nation’s World Tourism Organization, H.E. Ms. Elena Mina, presented on February 8th her credentials to the Secretary General of the Organization, Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili.

UNWTO Secretary General welcomed the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the Organization, based in Madrid, and wished her success in her work. Emphasizing the importance of the tourism sector for the Cypriot economy, Ms. Mina conveyed the greetings of the President of the Republic and of the Deputy Minister for Tourism and extended an invitation to Mr. Pololikashvili to visit Cyprus.

Ms Mina briefed the Secretary General on the Government's measures to deal with the COVID 19 pandemic as well as on the Strategic Plan for Tourism for the period 2020-2030. Mr. Pololikashvili, for his part, expressed UNWTO’s support to the Cyprus Strategic Plan for Tourism and the new digital campaign for the promotion of the Cypriot tourism product, describing these efforts as a very good opportunity for the development of sustainable tourism.

Thanking for the invitation to visit Cyprus, UNWTO Secretary General expressed the willingness to strengthen contacts and further cooperation, which will be discussed in a scheduled bilateral teleconference with the Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr. Perdios on 22/2/2021.

The Cypriot Permanent Representative took the opportunity to inform the Secretary General about the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and our side's expectations for reunification of the country with the achievement of a viable solution in the form of a bi-communal bi-zonal federation, according to UN parameters. UNWTO Secretary General, for his part, stating that tourism is a tool for peace, wished that these efforts be crowned with success.

  • In a ceremony held on January 29, 2021 at the Royal Palace, the new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Kingdom of Spain, Ms Elena Mina, presented her credentials to King Felipe VI.

During a private conversation in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Arancha González Laya, the Spanish King welcomed the Cypriot Ambassador and wished her every success in her mission, noting, at the same time the close relations of friendship and cooperation between Cyprus and Spain and expressing the will for their further strengthening.

Ambassador Mina conveyed to the Spanish Monarch the cordial greetings of the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis, and underlined the great importance that the Republic of Cyprus attaches to the further strengthening of its bilateral relations with Spain, a Mediterranean and European partner.

Taking the opportunity, Ms. Mina briefed the Spanish King on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, thanking Spain for its traditional support in international law and the efforts to find a just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem. King Felipe VI, for his part, expressed his country's support for the UN Secretary-General's efforts to resume talks.
