Bilateral Relations with Ireland

Ελληνικά

The Republic of Cyprus and Ireland have over the years enjoyed a very friendly, mutual, respectful and cordial relationship. Ireland was one of the first countries to offer military personnel to the establishment of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) in 1964 and it is estimated that since then more than 10,000 Irish military and civilian personnel have served in UNFICYP. At this point, Ireland's contribution to the United Nations Civilian Police in Cyprus (UNCIVPOL) is 18 garda officers.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Tassos Papadopoulos, visited Ireland in November of 2005. The President held meetings with the President of Ireland, Ms. Mary McAleese, the Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern, the Ceann Comhleire, Dr. Rory O’Hanlon and others. During his visit, the President officially opened the permanent exhibition of Cypriot antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street, Dublin, an exhibition which has been open to the public since then.

In October 2006, the President of Ireland, Ms. Mary McAleese, paid a state visit to Cyprus where the excellent relations of the two countries were once again reaffirmed. Ms. McAleese held meetings, amongst others, with the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the Speaker of the House of Representatives and had the opportunity to visit the old city of Nicosia and the cease-fire line and experience first-hand the tragic consequences of the forced division of the island.
